AND WHEREAS FIRE IS A SERIOUS PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERN, BOTH LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY AND HOMES ARE THE LOCATIONS WHERE PEOPLE ARE AT GREATEST RISK FROM FIRE.

AND WHEREAS HOME FIRES KILLED MORE THAN 2,800 PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES IN 2021, ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION AGENCY, OR I'M SORRY ASSOCIATION, THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES RESPONDED TO TH 338,000 HOME FIRES.

AND WHEREAS COOKING IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF HOME FIRES IN THE UNITED STATES AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS RESPONDED TO MORE THAN SI 166,400 ANNUALLY BETWEEN 2016 AND 2020.

AND WHEREAS TWO OF EVERY FIVE HOME FIRES START IN THE KITCHEN WITH 31% OF THESE FIRES RESULTING FROM UNATTENDED COOKING.

AND WHEREAS MORE THAN HALF OF REPORTED NON-FATAL HOME COOKINGS FIRE INJURIES OCCUR WHEN VICTIMS TRY TO FIGHT THE FIRE THEMSELVES.

AND WHEREAS CHILDREN UNDER THE FIVE FACE RISKER RISK, HIGHER RISK OF NON-FIRE BURNS ASSOCIATED WITH COOKING THAN BEING BURNED IN A COOKING FIRE.

AND WHEREAS KAUFFMAN COUNTY RESIDENTS SHOULD TURN POT HANDLES TOWARD THE BACK OF THE STOVE, KEEP COOKING LIDS AND FIRE EXTINCT, KEEP LIDS AND FIRE EXTINGUISH, FIRE EXTINGUISHERS RATED FOR KITCHEN FIRES NEARBY WHEN COOKING KEEP THREE FOOT KID FREE ZONE AROUND THE STOVE OVEN AND OTHER THINGS THAT SHOULD GET HOT AND WATCH WHAT THEY'RE COOKING AND SET A TIMER TO REMIND THEM THAT THEY ARE COOKING AND WHEN, WHEN THEY'RE COOKING.

AND WHEREAS RESIDENTS HAVE PLANNED AND PRACTICED A HOME FIRE ESCAPE PLAN ARE MORE PREPARED AND THEREFORE MORE LIKELY TO SURVIVE A FIRE.

AND WHEREAS COOKING, AND WHEREAS SMOKING WORKING SMOKE ALARMS CUT THE RISK OF DYING AND REPORTED HOME FIRES ALMOST IN HALF.

AND WHEREAS KAUFFMAN COUNTY FIRST RESPONDERS ARE DEDICATED TO REDUCING THE OCCURRENCE OF HOME FIRES AND HOME FIRE INJURIES THROUGHOUT PREVENTION AND PROTECTION EDUCATION.

WHEREAS KAUFFMAN COUNTY RESIDENTS ARE RESPONSIVE TO PUBLIC EDUCATION MEASURING AND ARE RE ARE ABLE TO TAKE PERSONAL STEPS TO INCREASE THEIR SAFETY FROM FIRES, ESPECIALLY IN THEIR HOMES.

WHEREAS 2023 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK THEME COOKING SAFELY STARTS WITH YOU PAY ATTENTION TO FIRE PREVENTION EFFECTIVELY SERVES A REMINDER TO US TO STAY ALERT AND USE CAUTION WHEN COOKING TO REDUCE THE RISK OF KITCHEN FIRES.

THEREFORE, WE, THE KAUFFMAN COUNTY COMMISSIONER'S COURT DO HERE HEREBY PROCLAIM OCTOBER THE EIGHTH THROUGH THE 14TH 2023 AS FIRE PREVENTION WEEK THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.

SO WE, TWO YEARS AGO WE ACTUALLY WENT TO THE COUNTY, WENT TO THE CAD, SPOKE WITH THE FIRM THAT REPRESENTS THE CAD ABOUT THIS, ABOUT HOW THE BEST WAY TO GO ABOUT DOING THIS WAS, AND THE COUNTY AT THE TIME SAID, HEY, WE DON'T, WE DON'T HAVE AN INTEREST IN IT.

UH, YOU KNOW, AND WE DECIDED, YOU KNOW, PUTTING OUR HEADS TOGETHER, THE BEST THING TO DO WAS AN ADVERSE POSSESSION LAWSUIT AGAINST THE UNKNOWN HEIRS.

UM, AND GO ABOUT THAT WAY BECAUSE MY, OUR, THE PEOPLE BEFORE THEM HAVE BEEN PAYING TAXES AND ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF ON THAT PARCEL.

SO WE'VE BEEN TIED UP IN LITIGATION IN KAUFMAN COUNTY FOR A YEAR.

HAD TO HIRE AN AD LITEM ATTORNEY TO GET THERE WAS, WE WERE PREPARING EXHIBITS TO GET READY TO GO TO TRIAL A COUPLE WEEKS AGO.

UH, WE RAN SOME, DID OUR ORIGINAL RUN SHEETS THAT THE TITLE COMPANY DID ON THE PROPERTY.

AND WE FOUND THESE DEEDS FROM 1937.

SO WE WENT BACK TO THE, TO THE, TO THE TITLE COMPANY AND THEY SAID, WELL APPARENTLY THERE WERE A BUNCH OF OLD RECORDS BEING SCANNED WHEN THAT WAS DONE.

AND THEY, THEY WERE GONE SO THEY DIDN'T FIND THEM IN THE INITIAL, EVERYTHING WENT THROUGH.

AND SO WE WENT AHEAD AND GA GOT A POLICY ON THE PART THAT IS NOT PART OF THE 2 5 1 ACRES.

BUT MY CLIENTS DID PAY FOR THAT.

THEY PAID THE HIDES FOR THAT PROPERTY.

UM, SO WE'VE ALREADY PAID FOR IT ONCE, EVEN THOUGH NOW IT'S DISCOVERED THAT THE COUNTY OWNS IT.

BUT WE JUST WANT TO GET IT RIGHT AND I MEAN, UH, AND GET IT IN THEIR NAME BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN HAVING A CONSTRUCTION LOAN THAT HASN'T CLOSED FOR TWO YEARS AND WE'VE LOST A LOT OF MONEY IN INTEREST RATES THAT HAVE GONE UP.

AND TO BE ABLE TO CLOSE IT, WE NEED TO PUT THE PROPERTY IN JIM CO'S NAME.

AND REALLY WHAT IT IS, IS THAT LITTLE GREEN TRIANGLE, UH, OR SORRY, IT'S GRASS.
