IS MINE.DISCUSS, CONSIDER ADOPTING A RESOLUTION AND AUTHORIZING A SUBMISSION OF A GRANT APPLICATION FOR ENGINE DEFENSE IMPROVEMENT GRANT PROGRAM.
IT WILL HAVE NO IMPACT ON THE CURRENT BUDGET.
KAREN, DO YOU WANNA SPEAK TO THIS FOR A SECOND? SO, UM, WHAT THIS IS, THIS IS A GRANT THAT WOULD ALLOW US TO HAVE A, UM, ASSOCIATE WORKER TO HELP ON THE ENGINE INDIGENT DEFENSE PROGRAM WITH THE POPULATION, INCREASE THE NUMBER OF CASES, INCREASING A NEW DISTRICT COURT.
UM, THE WORKLOAD FOR THE INDIGENT DEFENSE COORDINATOR HAS GREATLY INCREASED.
SO THIS GRANT WOULD ALLOW US TO THE COUNTY TO HAVE MONEY TO FUND THAT POSITION AT NO COST TO THE COUNTY, BUT WOULD REALLY PROVIDE A GREAT SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF KAUFFMAN COUNTY.
AND ONE OF THE THINGS TOO, THE SHERIFF MAY WANNA JUMP IN HERE.
THE APPLICATIONS FOR THIS SERVICE WENT FROM LIKE FOUR APPLICATIONS A WEEK TO 20.
WHEN PEOPLE ARE PUT IN JAIL NOW, WANTING PUBLIC DEFENDER TO HELP THEM OUT.
SO LISA HAS DONE A GREAT JOB SO FAR, BUT WHEN YOU GO FROM FOUR TO 20, THE PAPERWORK IS JUST SO ENORMOUS, YOU JUST CANNOT GET IT DONE.
SO THE GRANT IS THERE AND, AND WE NEED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT AND IT'S WORK THAT HAS TO BE DONE.
YOU KNOW, IT HAS TO BE, PEOPLE HAVE DONE, HAVE A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO, YOU KNOW, TO DEFEND THEMSELVES IF THEY CAN'T, TO SOMEONE TO BE APPOINTED TO DEFEND THEMSELVES IF THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO.

UM, THAT IS DOWN FROM THE PREVIOUS QUARTER BY 3.45%, BUT IT'S AN INCREASE OF SIX POINT 44% OVER THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR.
UM, IT'S BEEN KIND OF LOW LATELY, BUT WE DO HAVE A NEW TOOL WE'RE FIXING TO GET.
I'M HOPING WE'RE TRAINED ON IT SOMETIME IN FEBRUARY.

IT'S ADJACENT TO PRECINCT FOUR BARN.
UH, ACTUALLY THERE'S A PIECE OF PROPERTY, IT'S ACTUALLY, UH, 0.4591 ACRES.
SO IT'S JUST A LITTLE BIT LESS THAN HALF AN ACRE.
IT SITS ON THE CORNER OF OUR ROAD AND BRIDGE BARN AREA.
SO IF THAT PROPERTY WAS OBTAINED BY THE COUNTY, JUST SQUARE OUR BUILDING UP, GIVE MORE PARKING AREAS AND ROOM FOR OUR EQUIPMENT.
UH, I WAS APPROACHED BY THE GENTLEMAN WHO OWNS IT.

SO ANYWAY, WE PULLED SOME NUMBERS, UH, FROM THE APPRAISAL DISTRICT.
UH, THE PROPERTY TOTAL IS VALUED BY THE 110,000 WITH THE HOUSE ON IT.
SO THE LAND BY ITSELF IS VALUED AT 80,000.
SO WHAT I WANT TO DO TODAY IS JUST TO SEE IF THE COURT WOULD, UH, LET ME GO FORWARD WITH TRYING TO NEGOTIATE A DEAL WITH THEM TO MAYBE PURCHASE THIS TO ADD ONTO OUR ROAD AND BRIDGE PROPERTY.
SO THIS IS MORE OF NOT APPROVING THE SALE, BUT JUST PROVING THAT WE CAN NEGOTIATE AND MAYBE PURCHASE THIS.
